Analysis of mold characteristics and price uncertainty

Molds are important process equipment for industrial production and are special tools used to mold metallic or non-metallic materials into products. So what are its characteristics?

  • First feature of mold making: This is also the biggest and most basic function. This is the mold dependency for a particular user and the method of manufacturing a single part for a particular requirement. This feature makes the mold very different from other molding machines.
  • The second important feature of the mold. According to national standards, mold products are divided into 10 categories and 46 categories. Each type of mold has different characteristics and requirements. The same type of Stamping Die has different sizes and requirements. Large stamping dies weigh in tons, and a set weighs tens of tons. Small molds are calculated in kilograms only, and some sets weigh less than 1 kilogram. In addition to the difference in size, the material, structure, shape, accuracy, life and usage conditions of the mold are different, so the processing technology of the mold is very different. This makes mold design, process placement, process management, and even the operation of the entire enterprise extremely complex and difficult.
  • The third characteristic of mold making is technological progress and reliance on skilled skills. Molds are technology, workforce and capital intensive products. Mold manufacturing technology focuses many advanced new technologies on mechanical, electronic, optical, chemical, and some fringe science, with numerical control, information, and networking in the direction of development. Nevertheless, the mold’s reliance on skilled skills is much greater than other electromechanical products. Senior technicians are especially important in the mold industry for processing complex shapes, final finishing and finishing, assembling and commissioning.

Mold company size, level, conditions, different regions, and personal factors of the quoter. Therefore, there are many uncertainties in the price of manufacturing molds and it is very difficult to determine them accurately. Because of this, for the same mold making set in China, estimates between different companies can vary significantly, even 2-3 times. This is consistent with a survey conducted by the International Mold Association on mold estimates for different countries and companies.

In recent years, China’s mold industry has developed rapidly, but in reality there are some unhealthy and disturbing development phenomena, including unusually low mold prices. There are many factors that affect the price of the mold, but there are many uncertainties that make it difficult to achieve accuracy. However, there are many ways to calculate prices quickly, as users need to request a quote from the mold maker quickly. Currently, the following are more popular:

Empirical method based on key parameters

This method often uses the materials needed for the mold as the primary parameter and multiplies the material cost by a specific multiple to determine the mold price. Experience determines how many times it is based on the complexity of the mold and its requirements. Others use the man-hours required for the mold as the main parameter and multiply the man-hour cost by a specific multiple to get the mold price. Working hours and multiples are also largely determined by the experience of the quote staff. Citing materials and working hours as key parameters is more complex, but many people use it to improve pricing accuracy.

Analysis method based on historical data

This pricing method is primarily based on the prices of similar molds that have been completed in the past and have proven to be accurate.
The analysis is based on the difference between the mold making that needs to be cited and the mold used as a reference.
Multiply the base mold manufacturing price by a specific factor to get the mold price. The determination of this factor is primarily based on the bidder’s analytical ability and experience.

Cost forecast-based estimation method

This pricing method is to list as much as possible the various costs of mold processing. Get the price of the processing mold by adding the appropriate percentage of profit and related costs. This citation method is more compelling and easier for users to accept. It is often needed by some users, especially foreign companies and foreign users. The disadvantage of this method is that the estimated workload is large and slow.

Basic stage estimation

Mold production is divided into development, design, processing, finishing and assembly, measurement and testing, and after-sales service. Estimate the approximate cost of each stage individually and add other costs to get the quote.

Intuitive quote

This method depends entirely on the bidder’s experience. Bidder may consider the above four methods, but basically they are determined intuitively without calculation.

Computer system quote

In today’s computer world, it’s fast, convenient, accurate, and compelling. Often, the number of parameters is pre-populated on the computer and provides a variety of factors and official prices to influence the unique experience of compiling good computer program memory. When quoting, the computer will display the results quickly as long as you are entering data about the parameters. Bidder will quote accordingly. Although this estimation method can improve the accuracy of the estimation, its limitations are large and it is difficult to have programs, formulas, and related parameters suitable for various molds. Therefore, this method is often specialized and is only suitable for certain types of molds. Parameters, coefficients, formulas, and procedures differ depending on the type of type. The quotation system can be converted into software. To make a step-by-step decision for the user, such estimates are often divided into initial preliminary estimates and subsequent detailed estimates. Only if the user accepts the first preliminary quote, the quote talent will provide a subsequent detailed quote at the user’s request.

General formula for mold prices and related influencing factors.

Mold price = technical preparation cost + raw material cost + processing cost + assembly and commissioning cost + technical risk cost + packaging and transportation cost + profit + tax + other costs

This is a general formula for the fair price of molds in the mold industry. Technical preparation costs include prototype-based product modeling, geometry, process analysis, and mold design. Raw material costs include a variety of raw materials and standard parts, as well as purchased non-standard parts and components, and semi-finished products. The technical risk fee is determined mainly according to the technical difficulty of the mold. Other costs primarily include special tool costs, mold and component testing costs, insurance costs, and marketing costs. From the above formula and description, we can see the main influential factors of the mold price. Of course, the items listed are not required for all molds. However, one of these factors can make a big difference between different companies. For example, a company’s design methods and processing equipment can be very different, and employee salary costs can be quite different. You can see that there are actually many factors that affect the price of the mold. For this reason, it is very common for sets of the same type to have different quotes for different companies (or different bidders within the same company). Not surprisingly, even the difference is huge.

In summary, I would like to remind everyone to take resistance measures to make the price of mold making more rational. And we will jointly promote the healthy development of the mold industry at an affordable price.
